Josh And Stacy Engagement Shoot

Josh and Stacy got engaged on the 14th of February.  Yes that’s right they got engaged on Valentines day and not only that but they are getting married this month.  Marcus and I were granted the opportunity to do an engagement shoot for the lovely couple so we went to a local park and spent a few hours together.  Josh and Stacy met at work and quickly fell deeply in love a little over a year ago.   We had a wonderful afternoon talking with them as well as shooting their portraits and we are sure that they will have a wonderful life together.

The First Kiss

“Twas not my lips you kissed, but my soul,” wrote Judy Garland in 1939.   Nice sentiment and I can fully agree with it when I kissed my wife for the first time.   Truly a moment that I will never forget because it really did feel like coming home.  I am sure a lot of you know that feeling where within that moment everything just feels right.   I honestly don’t mind seeing public displays of affection because it brings a smile to my face.   Whether  it is a subtle touch of your partners back leading one through a doorway or seeing 2 couples holding hands and  even seeing the occasional  peck on the lips warms my heart.

All that aside this picture below was taken in front of roughly 12 people which included 3 sets of grandparents lol.  As you can see my wife’s niece is clearly blushing when this shot was taken.  I only wish I could have turned around fast enough to see how my brother in law was taking it all in.  I have to admit it was a little disconcerting even for me because I have known her since she was 5 years old and I was just thanking heavens that my daughter has a good 8 more years before she will be attending her prom.

Trip to Jerusalem Mill Village

Last Saturday Marcus and I took a trip to Jerusalem Mill Village which is located in Harford County Maryland and sits along side Little Gunpowder Falls.   The mill was established in 1772 by David Lee who was a Quaker from Bucks County Pennsylvania.  A gun manufacturer in the back of the mill made guns for the Revoluntionary War of 1776.   The surrounding village was also the site of a Cooperage, Blacksmith Shop, Wheelwright, Sawmill, General Store with Post Office and the Jericho Covered Bridge.  This mill was in operation until 1961 when the last miller died.

The Grounds of the Montpelier Mansion Part 1

Marcus and I had a fun and busy weekend.  We were contacted by a local musician that wanted some portraits done for his website so off we went to complete that job.    Afterwards we realized that we were very close  to the Montpelier Mansion in Laurel Maryland so we ventured over to see it.  We have well over 40 pictures that we want to share so we decided to break up the trip into two separate posts which just means that we are not done editing all of the pictures that we took yesterday.  The mansion sits on 70 acres of land and we had a lot of fun walking the grounds and snapping away!  We will post more historical information as well as photos on this historic site tomorrow but for now here are some of the photographs we took yesterday.

Such a novelty to catch Marcus not laying on the ground for once!

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade at the National Mall D.C

The weekend before last my children were with my in laws and my wife was out of town for a bachelorette party with her girlfriends.   I thought a weekend to myself so should I sit back and read a novel or spend some time with Netflix.   I remembered that the day before I had mentioned to my buddy that I was thinking about coming down his way so  I checked the weather and I saw that the days high would be in the upper 60′s.    I called my buddy told him lets spend the day pretending to be tourist while walking around the national mall.   Its funny because it only took me about 20 minutes to get there but it took us probably 30 minutes or so to actually find some where to park.   We ended up parking a good 8 blocks away from the mall but it was such a nice day that it really did not matter.  When we arrived at the mall we realized that there was a crowd gathering so we went to check it out.  Lucky for us the reason for the crowd was due to the Saint Patrick’s Day parade and it was literally just getting ready to start.   Below are some of the photos that I had taken that day.    This was the first full day with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and I promise I will not mention the name of this again lens after today.

The view from my friends rooftop deck. He mentioned that this condominium unit is the 2nd tallest residential unit in Washington D.C. The views were rather nice.

Off in the distance you can make out the National Cathedral.

The little ones are also waiting for the festivities to start.

This mischievous little girl was rolling coins into the middle of the road trying to throw off the dancers.

Yeah I will admit it. I had equipment envy!

Sigh...

Yes I know I should be far more discerning since the previous shot had a officer on a bike but hey I liked the color and the black and white.

His modeling rates were cheap so why not!

One of my favorite photos of the day.

There were a lot of talented young college students practicing on perfecting their art on this beautiful day.

Oh look it's me. I wanted to play king of the hill or well maybe king of the rock?

NICE!!!

This was Marissa one of the GW students that asked us for an interview in regards to the ad campaign they were working on for Nissan Corp. Lets hope she gets an A!

Yeah as you can see she interviewed us while standing on stilts. You really did not think she was taller than my 6"6 frame. Well I exaggerate a little :-)

The statue of the spider looks like it is going to pounce on the lady walking by

And there is my buddy Graham helping the 2 young ladies in the previous photo.

She had to move it off of the sidewalk

On our way back to the car I came across this and the colors and the contrast between the 2 was pretty awesome.

Just loving the bokeh that the Sigma 1.4 produces

It will be so hard to go back to anything above f/2.0

To Delete or Not Delete?

Over the last 2 weeks I have come across a few other bloggers that have posted photographs that they originally thought were not interesting or technically correct but have gone ahead and posted them anyway.  I for one have actually liked and loved quite a few of the photos that they thought were not worthy.   Well I figured I would do the same, so I opened up Lightroom last night and took a second look at some of the photos I originally deemed not worthy of posting.  :-)   Actually some still may not be worthy of posting but because  Marcus or my wife occasionally surprise me by saying they like a photo that I frankly thought was utterly blah, I have decided to post some of them here today.   So if you have a moment please let me know which ones to delete from my hard drive and which one or ones I should consider keeping.   The last 2 photographs in this series are my favorites of the bunch and I also have to confess that my wife did take the 2nd to last photo.  Thanks!

2 Miles Around The Block

Well this weekend was pretty eventful for Marcus and I.  We met up Saturday morning in Fells Point for a photo shoot with Kay who is a  model from Model Mayhem and  we had quite an enjoyable time photographing her.  We wrapped up around 1pm and we decided to head to the Grammercy Mansion in Hunt Valley Maryland which was about 20 miles away from our current location.  Once we arrived we quickly realized that the mansion was actually private property (WHOOPS) and it had been turned into a  bed and breakfast inn.   We did not feel like asking the proprietor for permission to photograph the mansion so we  decided to call it a day and head back home.   Before Saturday it had been about a week since I had used my camera and I was feeling antsy so I jumped back in the car and told myself If I don’t find anything in a 1 mile radius then I would just go home.  Well  1 mile quickly turned into  2 miles but I think it was worth it because I was able to take the photographs below.  Not stunners mind you but I need all the practice that I can get because I am nowhere near the 10,000 hours that Malcolm Gladwell suggests we need to be experts in a subject matter. :-)

Shoot with Karen from Model Mayhem

Last Saturday morning Marcus and I had the opportunity to work with Karen from Model Mayhem.  The shoot was in a scenic area of Baltimore called Fells Point.  Sadly it was a rather chilly morning so I want to make sure I thank Karen for volunteering her time to work with us.   So far we have nothing but good things to say about using Model Mayhem because we have been fortunate to meet wonderful people and I hope our luck continues!   Thanks again Karen we loved working with you and we hope to get the opportunity to do it again on a much warmer day :-) .

Garden Flowers

This weekend we visited my mother in laws for Easter.  She has a beautiful yard and of course I did not go out of town without my camera so I took advantage of the opportunity to take a few photographs.  I have not used my 55-250 for some time now and decided to use it because out of all my lenses this one has the best Macro ability.   No it is not a true Macro because the magnification is not 1:1 but closer to 1:3 so a dedicated Macro lens is  something that I will be thinking about getting later this year.

Pinup Themed Picnic Shoot – What color scheme works best?

For awhile now I wanted to work with a model or friend and shoot a pinup themed picnic.   We went to Model Mayhem and reached out to Mary,  a woman that lives in my town and thankfully she was up for it.  Mary and her husband own a home renovation business and she only does a few shoots a year for fun but she loved our idea.  This was our 3rd time working with a model from the Model Mayhem and once again we had a wonderful experience.    I can only hope our luck does not run out!!   Thank you Mary for spending the afternoon with us and we really do appreciate you volunteering your time.

Now my question to my fellow bloggers is which color scheme works best for what we were going for with this shoot.  As you can see below we processed some photos in color, sepia and black and white.  Marcus and I lean towards the sepia and black and white photos but my wife and her entire family leaned towards processing these pics in color.  I don’t think anything is wrong with the color photographs but do they work best for what we were trying to achieve?????

More Garden Flowers

Below are a few more photographs of my mother in-laws garden flowers.   The first Garden Flowers blog I posted were the of the photos that I took approximately 30 minutes after arriving at her house on Saturday evening and I had rushed to a bit to get those shots because it was family time and my wife was giving me that look that said ” you better put away that camera soon”.   Well Sunday morning I woke up a wee bit earlier than everyone else just so that I could spend a little more time capturing the photos that I missed the day before.  I think that I may seriously consider getting a true macro lens later this year or look at possibly getting an extension tube for the canon 55-250mm lens that these were taken with.   This weekend we are visiting my in laws again and I am going to take photos of the flowers shown below with my Sigma 85mm and the Tamron 28-75mm and see if the level of detail captured is any better.

Weight Watchers Champion “Dawn Weber”

This past weekend was filled with ups and downs.  We visited my mother in law and as well as attended the wedding of my wife’s best friend.  Sadly when we got back home we received news that my father in-laws mother had a stroke and they don’t expect her to make it.   It always amazes me how life can bring joy and pain within minutes of each other.

In the previous blog post I mentioned that I wanted to take photos of my mother-in-laws flowers using different lenses than the one I had used over the Easter holiday but due to everything that was going on that did not happen.    I did take some portraits of Dawn, my wife’s cousin over Easter weekend and I have posted them below.

Dawn entered the Weight Watchers Inspiring Stories Contest and by losing 60 lbs over the course of 9 months she ended up being one of the 100 winners nationwide.   While attending college I was a personal trainer at Golds Gym and over the course of 4 years I met a lot of people who struggled with their weight.  I know how hard it is to change your lifestyle and to be consistent with a diet and excercise program and I would say that the average client used to burn out over the course of 1 to 2 months.  To this day I still remember the names of clients that stuck it out and achieved their weight loss goals and  I admire them because I saw how hard they worked to get there.   Surprisingly Dawn says she never stepped into the gym but she did do some additional walking around the neighborhood 3 to 4 times a week.   Congratulations Dawn, I am happy  that you were able to achieve what you set out to do and picked up an award along the way.   Here is a link to a news paper article where she gives a little insight about what made her set out to achieve this goal.

The Before

New Camera and other stuff

The last 5 days have been filled with ups and downs and sadly I have not picked up my camera since Saturday.    This past weekend my wife and I attended the wedding of her best friend and when we got back to our in-laws we recieved the news that my father in laws mother had a stroke and sadly she passed on Monday morning.  Thursday Marcus’s 6 year old daughter had to be admitted to the hospital for a minor operation so it has been a trying week for all.  On a positive note Marcus and I both celebrated our birthdays which were in the first and second weeks of April.    I wonder if it is because we are both the same age and only a few days a part why we get along so well together.   I guess being 10 days older than him explains the reason why I am that much wiser.  :-) :-)

On a completely different note yesterday I finally broke down and decided to upgrade my T3i for the 7D .  I have been looking to upgrade my camera to the 7D or the Mark II  and I went to Canon’s website and noticed the price for a used one was literally $400 less than it costs brand new.  I called the customer service line around 8am and was trying to get some general information when they told me that since I was a loyal customer I also qualified for a 15% discount.  I could not resist the offer because I would literally be saving almost $600.  I also asked about the condition of the camera and the customer service rep claimed that most of their refurbished camera’s have less than  1000 shutter clicks.   I also only had to pay an additional $8 for them to overnight the camera so hopefully I will receive it today.  Around noon yesterday I received an email with a  coupon from Canon for 20% off of my next purchase and I made a mistake and went back to the Canon site to look at accessories for the 7D.  Well I ended up looking at external flash units and I ended up using my coupon and getting the 430exII for less than $200 and that would also be shipped over night at no cost to me.   I am calling this a Bday present to myself and I realize that I will not be able to purchase any thing else for the rest of this year and probably next year too :-) but the prices were just too good to resist.   If anyone is interested in buying Canon equipment I highly suggest you check out their site first because not only will you probably end up getting a good deal but you are buying from the manufacturer and all of their refurbished cameras come with a 90 day warranty.  I believe the  Mark II is listed for $1729 but with the customer loyalty program I got a quote of $1419.  In my opinion that price is a steal but you almost have to check the site hourly to see if they have one in because I was advised that they sell within hours of the item being listed.

Since I have not had a chance to shoot recently I had to go back and pull out some photos that were taken of my beautiful niece over Easter weekend.  This weekend Pirates are invading Fells Point so Marcus and I are hoping to get down there for a few hours to take photos of swashbuckling pirates and hopefully we sill spot Anne Bonny and Mary Read.

High ISO Portraits Of My Wife III

About 2 weeks ago I walked into our bedroom and caught my wife flexing her muscles.  It was cute really!!  My wife has always been athletic but due to a demanding career and raising a family etc it took awhile to get rid of the last 10lbs of baby weight she claims she was carrying around after having our son.   Anyways I am always looking for an opporunity to take photographs of her while she is in amiable mood which is far and few between.  While she was still talking I snuck back downstairs while throwing out phrases like yes dear, wow dear, you look fantastic always have dear, while grabbing my camera.  Of course as soon as I appeared back in the room she rolled her eyes but before she could say anything else I started firing away.

After viewing these photos and looking at the lighting in these images I have decided that its time to invest in some mono lights and speed lights.  The speed light I recieved yesterday yippe!  Don’t get me wrong I do like these particular photographs but I can see the value in getting to know and practice  different lighting setups.  All of these images were shot with Canon’s nifty fifty lens at f/1.8 with an ISO of 3200.   I think that using an ISO of 3200 is pushing the limits with the T3I and I am not sure how much of an improvement the 7D will provide but we will soon see.

Loch Raven Reservoir

Last week was one of the busiest weeks we had at work in years.  Worked 74 hours in 5 days which of course left no time to update much less read anyone else’s blogs.  The good news is that Marcus’s daughter was just released this weekend from the hospital after being there for 9 days.  This also was really the first time that I got to play with my new 7D which I received a good week ago and I have to say boy am I happy that I decided to upgrade.  I will give more of a review when I have used it for more than a week though but the auto focus system on that camera is fast fast fast!!

Marcus and I finally did get together for a short time this weekend and we visited Loch Raven Resevoir as well as the Historic Hampton Mansion located near Hunt Valley MD.  Loch Raven Resevoir provides most of the drinking water for the City of Baltimore and it was originally built as a Dam in 1881.  The lake also serves as a park for families to enjoy.  On its 2,400 acres you can find shooting ranges, numerous trails and picnic areas.

We were only here for about an hour because it was rather chilly near the water due to the high wind and we were not prepared for the conditions.  Once we decided to call it quits due to our hands becoming a little numb we headed out only to run into a police officer.   His name was mike and it just happens that he was watching us for awhile and he wanted to let us know a little about the numerous birds that could be found at the reservoir.  Turns out he is an amateur photographer and he pulled out his iphone and I have to say he had some of the most amazing photos of birds that I have seen taken on a phone period!!  Granted he is at this park 12 hours a day for 4 days a week but still I could not believe that they were all taken on his iphone.  He mentioned that he has come across the Wilson Storm Petrel, Red Tailed Hawk and a Red-winged Blackbird.  We chatted with him for a good 1/2 an hour and we decided then and there that we would come back when we had a good portion of a day to spend there.

These are just a few of the shots that I took while I was there and I will be posting the shots that Marcus took tomorrow.

Loch Raven Resevoir II

I mentioned yesterday that I would post the photographs that Marcus took once he uploaded them to our site and here they are.  I really do enjoy looking at his photographs because I always find it interesting that although we are at the same place and some times standing within feet of each other we see manage to see things differently.  He may be lying on the ground while I am shooting things flying in the sky and vice versa.  As a matter of a fact I think I was taking the photograph of the goose’s foot while Marcus caught the plane in the sky :-)

Jeesh Marcus.. I guess you could not take a little time and do some airbrushing huh??? :-)

Photo Session with American Girl Isabelle

Marcus and I have worked with a few models over the past few months and all in all we have had a great time shooting them.  But 2 weeks ago I worked with Isabelle from the American Girl agency and it ended up being the most frustrating photo shoot that I have ever been on.  She really could not take direction at all.  I would think she was looking at the camera but when I checked my lcd screen after a shot she was staring off into the distance.  To top it off she was telling me what angles she thought worked best for her and she showed a clear disregard for some of the poses that I had in mind.  Needles to say we may not work together again unless my daughter can find away to reason with her.  Here are a few pictures of the little diva below.

The Ridgely’s and Historic Hampton Part I

Last weekend on our way to Loch Raven Reservoir we passed some signs indicating there was a historical mansion nearby.  We originally thought it was a perfect day to spend  some time at Loch Raven Reservoir but it was rather windy and a tad chilly, we were not really dressed to be shooting in those conditions.  So after about an hour we decided to back track and see what this mansion was all about.  When we pulled up to the mansion our eyes grew a little big at the sight before us.  Amazing to think that we had not heard that much about this mansion and its history when we both live less than 20 miles away.  We also lucked out because we were able to spend 20 minutes chatting with a park ranger that was able to give us a lot of insight into the family that owned the mansion.    We were not able to photograph the entire grounds of the mansion because we only had an hour to shoot before the mansion was scheduled to close.   We fully intend to revisit this location because not only did we not get a chance to visit the slave quarters but surprisingly they allow you to photograph the inside the mansion.  Not counting the mansions in Newport RI this is the one of the most beautiful Georgian mansions that I have ever seen.  I kept walking around in awe at the beauty of the gardens and the mansion itself.

Hampton House was the mansion of Charles Ridgely.  He made his fortune from the Northhampton Furnace and Forge.  The Iron produced from this location was then shipped to England.  The family also cultivated and exported their tobacco crop.  The Mansion is built in Northern Balitmore County and it took 7 years to completed.  Construction started in 1772 and it was completed in 1790 right before Charles died. After it was completed the Hampton House was the largest private home in Northern America.  The mansion originally consisted of 24,000 acres of land and today the property consist of 60 acres of lans.   There is a huge terraced garden  and twenty buildings which include slave quarters.  Also on the property are six state champion trees.   The Hampton National Historic Site still retains many of its original outbuildings and landscape features that made the estate a showplace for the last 3 decades.  We were also told that nearly all of the furnishings seen in the Mansion today were originally owned by the Ridgelys.

While listening to the ranger we learned that there is a lot of interesting history behind the wealth of the family.  Slaves preformed the lowest-skilled, dirtiest jobs such as hauling materials. Indentured servants often worked as tradesmen; these higher-skilled jobs included molding the pig iron into bars and maintaining the correct mixture of iron ore, limestone, and lumber in the furnace. Free blacks also held both skilled and unskilled jobs. While white and black, free and enslaved, families worked together, working conditions were awful for all; food rations were poor, and child labor was common.

Well we did not want to bore you guys with too many photographs in one post so all of the photos in this post are taken from was was seen from the front of the mansion.  We will post additional photographs of the mansion sometime later.  If interested feel free to click on the following links below to learn more about the mansion and the family that owned it.

Portraits Session with Cynthia

A few weeks ago Marcus and I met up with Cynthia,  an old co-worker and friend of ours.  Cynthia has one of those personalities that is pretty addictive to be around.  She is always laughing about something as well as cracking jokes.  She actually had us laughing so hard I was afraid that most of the shots we took would be out of focus.   Cynthia’s childhood friend Melissa showed up during the shoot and that only made matters worse .  Just listening to them talk back and forth to each other made my head hurt because I was laughing so hard.

Cynthia is a beautiful mother of 3 boys and she has gone thru a rather tough time recently so she wanted photographs that captured her playfulness and we hope that is what we were able to deliver.  Thanks Cynthia and we are looking forward to our next shoot with you.

It was funny because Marcus literally picked her up by her waist and threw her in the tree.

Young Love – Prom Photographs

Well this month has consisted of many firsts for me.  Early Saturday morning we shot a fashion show  hosted by Macy’s and a Celeb from the DC housewives Paul Wharton.  That experience was pretty darn cool and I will post those photographs soon.   As soon as that event was over I had to jump in the car and head up to PA to shoot prom pictures of my wife’s niece and her boyfriend.   By the end of the day I was exhausted but also very excited because they were both new experiences for me.   Both my wife’s niece and her boyfriend are troopers because I can imagine how stressful it may have been having 12 or more family members with cameras taking pictures of them for almost 2 hours straight.    I could not help but smile the entire time I was photographing her because I remember when she was just a cute little 5 year old to now see that she is blossoming into a beautiful young lady.   There were way too many photos to post but if you would like to see more just visit the Facebook link at the bottom.
